At MixRank, we’ve observed that some of our most successful hires have been ex-founders. We only recently came to this conclusion ourselves, and now want to discover startup founders, who have shut down their company, or are in the chasm before the next venture.
If you're brimming with a founder's mentality, we're eager to welcome you to our team.
About MixRankMixRank (YC S11) is a data mining company that was founded in 2011. We’ve gone through YC, and raised funding from folks like 500 Startups, Mark Cuban and a few other Silicon Valley investors.
We’re a fully-remote company with over 40 team-mates all across the world. Almost half the team is comprised of data engineers, and the rest are Go-to-Market and Operations.
We have a decade of experience (in making mistakes). We turned profitable over 5 years ago, and have no plans of an exit or getting acquired for the next decade. Our team is exceptionally strong in both engineering and sales. We process over 3 petabytes of data each month, and are (surprisingly) one of the few data companies that own all our hardware, and run everything bare-metal.
Our customers include some of the world’s biggest sales platforms, recruitment solutions, VCs and PE firms, to startups that just launched in the latest YC batch.
To learn more about our work culture, please look to Glassdoor reviews or speak with our (past or present) team members. Please also check out https://mixrank.com/about.
What You’ll DoWhile we don't expect mastery in all, proficiency in at least one of the following is crucial:
- Content & SEO: Initiate and lead our content journey, crafting unique, data-driven content.
- Technical SEO: Enhance website performance and discoverability, with the willingness to learn and apply new techniques.
- Paid Ads: Reboot our ad strategy, focusing on branded keywords and conversion optimization.
- CRO & Landing Pages: Fine-tune our landing pages for better design, mobile optimization, and lead capture.
- Product Marketing: Deepen customer relationships, providing valuable resources from decision-making to implementation.
Here’s the Opportunity
Our journey in marketing is just beginning. Prior to our website redesign 2 years ago, we went 5 years without any changes to our homepage. Up until early last year, ~90% of our leads came in via outbound & referrals.
But over the last 2 years, we’ve done a website redesign, and invested $500/mo into ads. In January 2024, we had 21 inbound leads (with an average ACV of $40k).
Imagine what we could do if we were actually good at marketing? :)
Jokes aside, we’re a fiscally conservative company. All our funding money ran out years ago. Since then, we’ve been spending from revenue. And so, we’re conservative in how we’d want to move forward in any new initiative (including marketing). But we’d love for someone to come in, start working within constraints, and help us scale in impact as well as budgets and spends.
Who We’re Looking For- Flawless English: Absolutely no compromises here. Both the founders are anal about having clarity of thought and being able to communicate that effortlessly. Our team is fully distributed as well, so 90% of internal communication happens over Slack. As a marketer, that skill needs to extend to customers as well — You need to be great at getting your point across, both in writing and speaking. Imagine crafting a punchy headline or diving deep into a 3,000-word article — that's the range we're talking about.
- Have gone from 0 to 1, in terms of marketing strategy. We really want someone that understands where we are, and what needs to be done. We’re also at a stage where there’s no one else. So, that means having to roll up your sleeves, and working without needing agencies or even a team (at least initially).
- Highly Self-driven and Accountable: Here's the deal – we're 100% remote. No daily check-ins or endless meetings. It's mostly you, your goals, and your screen. That means you've got to be the kind of person who can really drive themselves. If you've got a history of working remotely or have demonstrated that you’re very good at managing yourself on a day-to-day basis, you're who we're looking for.
- Long-term Commitment: MixRank has been around for over a decade. We're small but growing steadily, and we're not planning an exit anytime soon. We're in it for the long game — think long-term projects and steady growth that make a real impact over time. If you're looking to put down roots and really grow with a company, we could be a great fit.
- Hardworking: This goes without saying, but we like to believe we’re all hard workers, and we want someone with a very similar work ethic. Because we’re a small team, it becomes obvious when someone isn’t pulling their weight because that impacts everyone else on the team. So, we want folks that are able to commit to MixRank during work hours, and follow a strong work ethic.
- Detail-oriented: How many times do you proof-read something before it gets launched or published? We aim for perfection, and while we know it’s not reasonable to be perfect with every single thing, trying to do so goes a long way in ensuring everything we do is high-quality.
- Project ownership: You’re capable of taking full ownership of everything you’re working on. Oftentimes, you end up working on projects that may require inputs or even help from other departments. Because of such external dependencies, projects may end up being on hold. The ideal candidate can take on accountability for such projects, and try and complete them without passing over the buck to someone else.
- Resourceful: Being part of a startup, especially in a team without a dedicated marketing department, means sometimes you've got to get creative. You might find yourself in new territory, where there's no set path. We need someone who sees this as a challenge, not a roadblock. Roll up your sleeves, figure it out, and make things happen.
- Action-biased and Analytical — there’s plenty to do, but sometimes the next item may not be as obvious. We believe the ideal candidate should always have a backlog of items they need to get to, but end up prioritizing the most significant and most urgent projects, at all times.
- Our compensation model is based on seniority and location. But being transparent, our current budget will likely not allow us to hire someone in the US full-time. But if you are based in the US and still want to apply, and we both find each other to be very strong fits, we would love to have you on a part-time basis, and evolve that into a full-time opportunity down the line.
- Remote Flexibility: Full freedom to work from anywhere.
- Health Coverage: 100% health (including vision and dental) insurance for you and your immediate family.
- Life Insurance: Ensuring peace of mind for you and your loved ones.
- Unlimited leave policy: Take as much time as you need, but do right by your team-mates.
- Learning and Growth: Unlimited book budget and personal development fund.
- Fitness Grant: Stay healthy and active with our fitness grant.
- Entertainment Perks: Enjoy streaming services with our entertainment grant.
