ConvertKit is a creator marketing platform built to empower creators to earn a living online. We help them own their audience and turn fans into customers. For makers, authors, chefs, musicians, athletes, and anyone else making a living by creating the culture we all love, there isn’t a better tool for reaching inboxes. More importantly, there isn’t a team more committed to helping creators earn a living doing work that matters.
We’re on a mission to help creators earn $1 billion using our email marketing platform. We have always been 100% independent and 100% remote. We are proud to have built a product that our customers love, and we look for people who have enthusiasm and belief in our mission, vision, and values to join our team.
The Role
ConvertKit is hiring a VP of Engineering who will be a strong leader for the company, a terrific collaborator for Product, and an excellent people manager who can guide the team to ship high-quality, reliable and scalable software quickly.
You’ll be leading a diverse team of 3 Engineering Managers, 22 backend, front-end, and infra engineers extending a complex software system that sends over 2 billion emails a month. Under the hood, ConvertKit is built on Ruby/Rails and React on top of MySQL, has significant components that make use of Elastic Search and Cassandra, and is deployed on AWS.
Some interesting problems the engineering management team faces in the next year include:
- Continuing to scale our software systems to meet increasing customer demand
- Working with Product Managers and Individual Contributors to optimize scoping conversations
- Enabling each squad and each engineer to work autonomously
- Working across teams to improve product analytics capabilities and enable squads to deeply understand our customers and act confidently to address their needs.
This position is perfect for someone who wants to contribute to and grow with our company's vision. Through our passion and commitment to the creative community, we strive to be a small yet efficient team that is self-funded and works remotely. If this sounds like something you'd like to do, then this may be the job for you!
Requirements:
- Lead the Engineering team, to build an effortless product used by millions of creators.
- Help ConvertKit grow while maintaining our strong internal culture; set strategy, plans, and measurement; and ensure communication flows through the org.
- Work with the Product team to improve our product development processes and bring the most value to our customers.
- Help the engineering function mature with initiatives like scoping, platform stability, tech lead roles, and engineering metrics.
- Collaborate with Operations on people processes like interviewing, hiring, and professional development.
- Increase - and retain - diversity across engineering by sponsoring underrepresented voices and actively recruiting from your diverse network.
- Facilitate individuals’ development through strengths-based coaching. Help your EMs understand the different stages of the employee lifecycle and how to proactively manage their team members through each of them.
- Deeply understand our customer base to build the best tool to serve creators. Stay up to date on market trends, creator needs and product opportunities.
Strong candidates will:
- Have extensive experience leading software teams to quickly ship well-tested features with a consistent cadence, on a stable, scalable and secure infrastructure.
- Be adept at using business and product metrics to make decisions and drive direction.
- Have the ability to foster both high performance and a high degree of psychological safety on the team.
- Guide and mentor your team with clarity and empathy. Be comfortable delivering constructive feedback to drive individual growth and foster productive conflict of ideas.
- Be autonomous and self-motivated to work effectively in a 100% remote company.
- Have a background in developing applications using Ruby on Rails, and experience with other tools in our technology stack: AWS, React, MySQL, Elasticsearch, Cassandra. This is not a hands-on coding role, and experience leading software development is more important than programming skill
- Have enthusiasm for and belief in our mission, vision, and values.
Success in this role will be measured by:
- Creating a world-class culture of inclusivity and belonging -- Qualitatively, we evaluate the happiness of engineers at ConvertKit, the commitment to diversity and inclusion, the psychological safety of the engineering environment, the contribution of engineers to the overall company culture, and our contribution to the wider engineering culture in the industry. Quantitatively, we measure team happiness through our regular engagement survey (leading indicator) and unwanted turnover (lagging indicator).
- Growth of our customer base -- The engineering team is responsible for scaling our infrastructure and building product to grow and retain free and paying customers on our platform. Experience at a product-driven SaaS B2C company ideal.
- Creating and driving our north star metrics -- We regularly evaluate our metrics to understand the value we provide to customers.
- Customer happiness -- The goal of everything we build is to make our customers happy. Engineers influence customer happiness (leading indicator) and churn (lagging indicator) by actively participating in establishing roadmaps and building high quality products that delight creators.
- Speed -- Our goal is to build the best creator marketing platform in the world. To do this, we need to constantly focus on increasing product development velocity without sacrificing quality.
- Keeping our promises -- We set SLAs that correspond to core app availability and functionality for our customers. We may not be an enterprise company with contracts dependent on SLAs, but we act like we are.

ConvertKit is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity in all of its forms, and we hire the best person we can for each role, no matter your personal background. Research tells us that applicants who are female or non-binary, as well as applicants who are people of color, are less likely to apply for roles they do not feel 100% qualified for. If you think you meet more than 50% of our requirements but fewer than 100% of them, please apply. We’re imperfect communicators, so think of our job postings as the starting point for discussion rather than proof that you shouldn’t apply.
